A list of search results is displayed as shown below.

3-1 Display and function

Number of results (1-a)

Indicates the number of records retrieved by your search, although only the first 10,000 records can be displayed.


Page navigation (1-b)

Display the next page or a previous page by clicking the arrow button or click a page number to go directly to that page.


Checkbox (1-c)

Select the checkbox to the left of a record to apply functions such as adding the record to My List or downloading bibliographic records.

Click the Select All checkbox to select all records displayed on the page. Unselect the checkbox to clear all records.


Add to My List (1-d)

Use the pull-down menu to select the Add to My List function and click the Submit button to add the selected records to My List.


Download bibliographic records (1-d)

Use the pull-down menu to select either Download Bibliographic Record (tsv) or Download Bibliographic Record (BibTeX) and click the Submit button to download the selected records in your preferred formats.


Results per page (1-e)

Use the pull-down menu to select 20, 50, or 100 records per page and click the Apply button to change the display.

Choose a number of display and click "Apply" button.

This setting is saved when you are logged into your NDL Online account.


Sort options (1-f)

Use the pull-down menu to select your preferred sort option and click the Apply button to sort your results by relevance, title, year, author, or call number.

This setting is saved when you are logged into your NDL Online account.


3-2 Refining your search (1-g)

Search results can be filtered using the categories and subcategories shown in the left margin, which can be applied as either inclusive or exclusive filters to refine your search.

Click on any subcategory to apply an inclusive filter for that subcategory. For example, clicking on the Available Online subcategory will display only those records that match your search string and are available online. Alternately, you can apply an exclusive filter for materials that are available online by clicking the Exclude icon (minus sign) in the upper right corner of the Accessibility category to active the exclusive filter, and they click on Exclude Available Online to display only those records that match your search string and are not available online.

* Exclude periodical issues, etc. and Exclude periodical articles, etc. subcategories as well as the Year category do not have Exclude icons.

Accessibility Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per accessibility.
Material Type Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per type of material.
Exclude periodical issues, etc. Filter your search results by excluding periodicals and similar materials.
Exclude periodical articles, etc. Filter your search results by excluding articles of periodicals and similar materials.
Material Format Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per material format.
Collection Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per collection.
Location Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per location: the Tokyo Main Library, the Kansai-kan, or the International Library of Children's Literature.
Year Filter your search results by specifying a year of publication.
* Journals and newspapers cannot be filtered per year of publication.
Publisher Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per the ten publishers which appear most frequently in the search results.
Author Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per the ten authors which appear most frequently in the search results.
Text Language Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per the language of the text for the ten authors which appear most frequently in the search results.
Classification Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per the main classes of the Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC).
Database Filter your search results either inclusively or exclusively per the databases in which the materials are included.

Material format (3-a)

One of the following material format icons is displayed.

An Online/Digital icon is shown in combination with the icon for the original format for materials that have been digitized.

Bibliographic record (3-b)

The title, series, material type, author, publisher, year, and other information are shown.

Click the title to display the bibliographic record.

When a record is retrieved from the contents, table of contents, or summary/abstract of a material, the corresponding part is displayed.


Holding location (3-c)

The location where the material is held is shown.


Link to the NDL Digital Collections (3-d)

A Digital button and the access restrictions are shown for materials that are part of the NDL Digital Collections.

Click the link to view the content in the NDL Digital Collections.


Grouped materials

Related materials are displayed as a group when sorted by relevance.

Up to five related materials are displayed. Click the Show Related Materials button located below the group to display up to 20 additional materials.

A Search All Related Materials is displayed when there are more than 20 related materials. Clicking this link to search all related materials.
