2. Search

1 Simple search｜2 Advanced search｜3 Search operators

Search for library materials on either this page or the Search Result page.

2-1 Simple search (1-a)

Search for library materials by title, author, publisher, subject, table of contents, other numbers, etc.

Type the keywords you wish to search for in the text box and click the Magnifying Glass icon to display a list of search results.

Unless otherwise indicated, space-delimited keywords are processed as an AND search.

2-2 Advanced search (1-b)

Use multiple search options to make your search more precise.

Click the Advanced Search button on the right side of the search box to toggle the Advanced Search screen on and off.

Fill in the necessary search fields and click the Magnifying Glass icon to display a list of search results.

You can limit search results to a specific type of material or collection by selecting the appropriate checkbox. Some materials or collections have unique search fields.

Click the Select Multiple button to search more than one type of material at a time.

Title	Search by title of a book or periodical.
Call No.	Search by Call No.
Author/Editor	Search by name of author, editor, or translator of books and serials. Use the Web NDL Authorities to refer to Authority Files for Authors.
Publisher	Search by name of publisher.
Year	Search by year of publication. Please enter a valid four digit year. * Since journals and newspapers cannot be searched for by year, please leave these fields blank.
Subject	Search by subject heading. Use the Web NDL Authorities refer to the Subject Authority File.
Classification	Search by NDC, NDLC, GHQ/SCAP, or other classification number. Use the pull-down menu to select the appropriate classification. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search. Please refer to the following pages to find classification numbers. ・国立国会図書館分類表 (in Japanese) ・GHQ/SCAP Classification ・USCAR Classification ・MCJ Geographic Codes
Other No.	Search by ISBN, ISSN, Article Report No., Dissertation Report No., JPNO National Bibliography No., DOI, NDL Digital Collections Persistent ID, or NDL Bibliographic ID. Use the pull-down menu to select the appropriate type of number. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search. * Please use the pull-down menu before searching by Report No. or Standard No.
Text Language Code	Search by language. Click the Text Language Code icon to display and select from a list of available language codes. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search.
Original Text Lang. Code	Search by language of the original text. Click the Text Language Code icon to display and select from a list of available language codes.
Country Code	Search by country of publication. Click the Country Code icon to display and select from a list of available country codes.
Accessibility	Search by accessibility: Available Online, Via the Internet, Only at the NDL, Available only at the NDL and its partner libraries or to official registered users in Japan, Not Available Online.
Location	Search by location: Tokyo Main Library, Kansai-kan, International Library of Children's Literature, etc.
Material format	Search by material format: Printed Matter, Microform, CD/DVD-ROM, Online/Digital, and Other Format.
Database	Search by database: National Diet Library Catalog, The Japanese Periodicals Index, NDL Digital Collections, NDL Digital Collections Online, or E-Books and E-Journals.
Exclude from search target - Periodicals by issue, etc. - Periodicals by article, etc.	Select this checkbox to exclude periodical issue, etc. from the search. Select this checkbox to exclude article, etc. from the search.
Use "OR" between search boxes	Select this checkbox to process an OR search between multiple search fields.

Unique search fields per type of material or collection

Some types of materials or collections have unique search fields that are displayed only when you select that particular material or collection.

See section 1-4 Overview of library materials for more information on types of materials or collections.

Articles
Periodical Title	Search by title of periodical.
Volume	Search by volume of periodical. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search.
Issue	Search by issue of periodical. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search.
Japanese and Chinese Old Materials
Japanese and Chinese Old Materials	Select the checkbox to search only Japanese or Chinese Classics.
Printed matter and manuscripts	Select the checkboxes to search by printed matter, manuscripts, or both.
Doctoral Dissertations
Conferring Univ.	Search by conferring university.
Degree Type	Search by type of degree.
Maps
Scale	Search by either scale or coordinates by selecting the appropriate item from the pull-down menu. When searching by scale, space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search. When searching by coordinates, space-delimited keywords are processed as an AND search.
Map Projection Code	Search by map projection code, such as bd (Mercator) or bf (Mollweide). Click the Map Projection Code icon to display and select from a list of available projection codes. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search.
Nautical Chart No.	Search by National Chart No., International Chart No., or Local Government Code by selecting the appropriate item from the pulld-own menu. Space-delimited keywords are processed as an OR search.
Materials on the Allied Occupation of Japan
Series	Search by series.
Modern Japanese Political History Materials
Target	Select the checkboxes to search by correspondence, manuscript, diary, photograph, image, or any combination thereof.
Addressee	Search by addressee of correspondence, etc.
Materials for Persons with Print Disabilities
Format	Select the checkboxes to search by electronic resources (DAISY etc.), audio materials (tape), braille materials, large Print, or any combination thereof.
Note (Information about the original, production, etc.)	Search by typing in a description of the material, such as size or duration.
Limit search to materials produced by the NDL	Select this checkbox to limit your search to materials produced by the NDL.

2-3 Search operators

Searching for exact matches, partial matches or phrases

Use the search operators ", *, or ／, as described below.

Exact searches	Add a slash (／) before and after the keyword. Type ／Spider／ to search for records with an item containing the word Spider and only the word Spider.
Prefix or suffix truncation searches	Add an asterisk () after the keyword. Type creat to search for records with an item that start with creat, such as create, creator, or creation. In the advanced search fields of Call No. or Other Numbers, you can add an asterisk () either before or after the keyword. Type 789 to search for records with an item that includes numbers that end with 789, such as 6789, 12789, or 000789.
Exact phrase searches	Add double quotation marks (") before and after the phrase. Type "journal of science" to search -> retrieved records which have "journal of science"

AND/OR/NOT Search

The operators AND, OR, and NOT (in capital letters) are placed between words.

* The order of execution (precedence) for Boolean operators is from left to right.

AND	heart AND cardiac -> retrieve all records having both heart and cardiac in them.
OR	heart OR cardiac -> retrieve all records having heart or cardiac in them.
NOT	heart NOT cardiac -> retrieve all records having heart but not cardiac in them.
