11-1 Service Summary

What is the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals

This service allows patrons to use their own devices to browse and print out via the Internet digitized materials from the NDL that are still protected by copyright but have become difficult to obtain due to being out-of-print or other reasons. Who can use the service

This service is available to all official registered users of the NDL who reside in Japan and have agreed to the Terms of Service for the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals.

An official registered user is one who has completed the application process by submitting documentation necessary to verifying their identity. This service is not available to simple registered users who have not completed the application process, which can be done via the Internet, by postal mail, or in person at the NDL.

Available materials

Materials from the NDL Digital Collections that are classified "Available only at the NDL and its partner libraries or to official registered users in Japan" are available for browsing via this service. For more information, please refer to the section on Available Materials in the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals.

System requirements

Currently, there are limitations in displaying images of materials on devices with small screens (smartphones and tablets), and some materials may be difficult to browse. We recommend using a PC or a device with a large screen.

11-2. How to use

New user registration (first time users of the National Diet Library)

First-time users of the NDL can apply for user registration via the NDL Online. Once your identity is verified and your registration completed, can use the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals. For details, please refer to section 9. Login and User Registration.

It takes as long as five business days for the NDL to verify your application.

Simple registered users

Simple registered users can upgrade their registration type to official registered user by completing the registration process. Once your identity is verified, you can use the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals. For details, please refer to section 8-2. Upgrade to official user registration.

Official registered user

Official registered users are able to access the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals after accepting the terms of service described in section 11-3. Terms of Service.

11-3. Terms of Service

The terms of service for the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals will be displayed automatically the first time you login to the NDL Online after completing the process to become an official registered user. Please read the terms and select Agree.

※The terms of service are not displayed when you login to the NDL Online from a user terminal on the premises at the NDL.

If you select Do Not Agree, the terms of service will no longer be displayed when you login to the NDL Online, but you can display and agree to the terms of service at any time in the future from your My Account page.

If you select Suspend, the terms of use will once again be displayed automatically when you login the NDL Online.

11-4.Searching and browsing materials in the National Diet Library Digital Collection

Please login to the NDL Digital Collections to search and browse digital contents for individuals.

You can browse the digital images of materials in the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals.
